Job Title: Editor-in-Chief – Obesity and Endocrinology

Reporting to: ESE Publishing and Communications Committee

Responsible for: Obesity and Endocrinology Editorial Board

Appointment: The initial term for the Editor-in-Chief of Obesity and Endocrinology is three years. The term will start on signature of the Editor-in-Chief contract. On completion of the initial three-year term the appointment may be renewed for an additional three-year period by agreement of all parties.

Remuneration: The Editor-in-Chief receives an honorarium of €10,000 per annum.

We are seeking an Editor-in-Chief for ESE’s new fully owned  open-access Obesity and Endocrinology journal which will launch this year (2024).   

Obesity and Endocrinology is the new European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) inter-disciplinary open access journal.  The journal will cover high-quality clinical and translational research and reviews on all aspects of obesity, both in respect to the complexity of obesity as an endocrine disease, and its biology, diagnostics, treatment and relationship with other endocrine and metabolic diseases.  The journal will also incorporate the interplay between the microbiome and the exposome as well as the sociological, political, and global implications of this complex area.

We are looking for an experienced and ambitious Editor-in-Chief who will build the Journal’s scientific reputation and establish it as a high-quality choice for publication. The Editor-in-Chief will have a unique opportunity to help craft the aims, scope and direction of the Journal to maximise its impact in the market from launch.

The Editor-in-Chief role will be hands-on, with the incumbent processing the papers personally. Administrative support will be provided by a professional Editorial Office at Oxford University Press (the publisher of ESE’s flagship journal, the European Journal of Endocrinology and now Obesity and Endocrinology). The Editor-in-Chief will  be tasked with developing an Editorial Board to support the Journal, and may delegate a proportion of submissions to appropriate Associate Editors if desired. There is scope to review the Editorial Office arrangements; however the incumbent must remain the key driver for the direction and quality of the Journal.

The Editor-in-Chief post receives an honorarium of €10k per annum.

The Journal will be launching into a competitive environment and, in that respect, the Editor-in-Chief will at all times act as a true ambassador for the Journal in all scenarios. They will represent the Journal, working with the Publisher and the wider editorial team, to raise its profile and encourage high-quality submissions that support the Journal’s mission.

The role of the Editor-in-Chief is to drive the development and direction of the Journal in line with its strategic aims, provide leadership for the Editorial Board, and oversee a fair and rigorous peer-review process. The Editor-in-Chief will regularly interact with the leadership of ESE for mutual information and collaboration on guidelines and consensus statements as well as coordination with other ESE journals through ex-officio membership of the ESE Publications and Communications Committee.

The Editor-in-Chief will be  supported in this work by the Journal’s Editorial Board and will work closely with the journal publishing team at Oxford University Press. To ensure the efficient operation of the Journal it is important that the Editor-in-Chief will set aside regular time to work on Journal matters and respond in a timely manner.

The Editor-in-Chief will lead the Editorial Board to:

  • Develop and implement the strategic aims of the journal in cooperation with the journal publishing team and in alignment with the goals and mission of ESE.
  • Solicit manuscripts - this is especially crucial in the first few years after launch. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for commissioning and soliciting manuscripts to ensure a strong pipeline of submissions from the first year after launch.
  • Ensure that content of the Journal is accurate, credible, authoritative, relevant to the Journal’s scope and mission, readable, and comprehensible.
  • Set and communicate Journal policies.
  • Advance the reporting of science in ways that ensure the highest standards of reliability, accessibility, openness, and integrity of the scientific enterprise
  • Act as ambassador to represent and promote the Journal through their personal and professional networks and while attending international conferences.
  • Periodically report to the ESE on the progress of the Journal, including participating in ESE Publishing and Communications Committee meetings where appropriate.

The Editor-in-Chief will:

  • Organise and be responsible for the screening of new submissions for suitability in a timely manner, prior to assigning submissions to appropriate Editors who will manage the external peer review. This may be delegated to the members of the Editorial Board; however the Editor-in-Chief must remain the final decision maker for all materials published in the Journal.
  • Select manuscripts that are of a high quality and are scientifically sound.
  • Oversee the peer review process, ensuring that this is fair and unbiased, and that consistent standards of acceptance and rejection are maintained. Ensure steady and sufficient copy flow for the journal.
  • Establish procedures to help maintain Journal quality. Monitor editorial processing and production timelines.
  • Recommend transfer of appropriate submissions to journals recommended by the ESE.
  • Communicate editorial decisions to authors and manage any complaints and challenges to decisions in a timely manner.
  • Manage publications ethics issues in line with recommendations from the Committee on Publications Ethics (COPE).

The Editor-in-Chief will:

  • Appoint and manage the membership of the Editorial Board, ensuring that there is sufficient expertise to manage the submissions to the Journal and that the Editorial Board is representative of the journal’s diverse community of authors and readers.
  • Act professionally, without prejudice or conflict of interest.
  • Set and chair a programme of meetings of the Editorial Board to maintain the engagement of the Board members and drive the development of the Journal in line with its strategic aims.
  • Participate in monthly meetings with the publishing team.
  • Lead an annual Strategy Meeting.
  • Lead the annual in-person meeting of the entire Editorial Board.
  1. Has an excellent scientific track record in endocrinology and its underlying sciences, with a strong record of publication.
  2. Is active in obesity and metabolism.  An interest in the areas of diabetes, nutrition, microbiome or exposome related to endocrinology also an advantage.
  3. Is focused within the clinical and translational area.
  4. Has the time, drive, ambition, and vision to launch and establish the new journal.
  5. Has an international network and profile.
  6. Has significant editorial experience of other journal(s).
  7. Is actively engaged in research and is publishing their work.
  8. Good communication skills in English.
