Initiative for Science in Europe

The Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE) is an independent platform of European learned societies and scientific organizations whose aim is to promote mechanisms to support all fields of science at a European level, involve scientists in the design and implementation of European science policies, and to advocate strong independent scientific advice in European policy making.

ISE is widely recognised for having played an instrumental role in the creation of the European Research Council (ERC), an instrument to foster and fund frontier research of the highest quality in all scientific disciplines at European level.

The first President of ISE was Jose Mariano Gago, former Portuguese Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education and one of the initiators of concept of European Research Area (ERA), followed by Julio Celis and Federico Mayor, former Director General of UNESCO. The current President of ISE is Maria Leptin, Director of EMBO.
