Consensus initiative for adult chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO)/SAPHO syndrome: In-person meeting

5 - 6 Oct 2023

The Consensus Initiative for Adult Chronic Nonbacterial Osteomyelitis (CNO)/SAPHO Syndrome, hosted by Elizabeth M. Winter (MD, PhD, Associate Professor) and the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Centre for Bone Quality at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) will be held on 5 - 6 October 2023 in Leiden, The Netherlands, after a first online pre-meeting that took place on 21 June 2023.

Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is an impactful inflammatory bone disease affecting both children and adults. The internal diagnostic classification of the CNO spectrum is poorly resolved, with overlapping or conflicting terminology handled internationally. CNO can also be one manifestation of the rheumatic entity of SAPHO syndrome, the standing acronym for the combination of synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis and osteitis.

This International Consensus meeting on Chronic Nonbacterial Osteomyelitis comprises an online pre-meeting held on 21 June 2023 where topics such as disease definition and terminology, diagnostics and imaging, treatment and monitoring were discussed after an online first Delphi round. The second Delphi round is currently open. The in-person meeting will be then taking place on 5 - 6 October 2023 in Leiden, with the following preliminary programme items:

  • Welcome & summary digital meeting (Elizabeth M. Winter & A. Leerling)
  • Disease definition: terminology, spectrum & scope, subtypes
  • Diagnostics: clinical symptoms, biochemical, differential diagnosis
  • Imaging
  • Treatment agents, steps and patient stratification, monitoring
  • Wrap-up and adjourns (Elizabeth M. Winter)

Further information on this ESE Endorsed event can be found in the attached draft programme.

This Consensus initiative meeting is also endorsed by the European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS).
