RE Plans for postponing ECE 2020
The Coronavirus pandemic has now become a global problem. We know that many of you will be fighting this virus in your hospitals and clinics and worrying for the health of your families and friends as well as your patients. As you know, I am based in Milano, probably the most critically affected place in the world currently, and I feel for each one of you. You are all doing a fantastic job in such a difficult situation.
Since our last communication on 4 March, the situation has changed substantially worldwide, including in the Czech Republic where ECE is due to be held, and continues to develop. I am sure that ECE 2020 is not at the top of your thoughts currently but, as I promised, we have been very carefully monitoring the current rapidly evolving situation. I know how important this event is for all of you, and we need to ensure that the Congress is not only exciting but is also a safe place for every endocrinologist in our community.
I am sure that all of you expect a timely and clear decision on ECE 2020 from ESE and, knowing me well, from myself as ESE’s President.
Our first priority is the health and safety of our members and the wider endocrine community and, in this current situation, we do not feel that holding ECE in May 2020, two months from now, is the best course of action. Moreover, it would not make sense for me to advise everyone to “#StayHome” and meanwhile continue to plan to hold ECE 2020 in May.
Therefore, very sadly, but with the surety that this is the right decision, I announce that it is not possible for ESE to hold ECE 2020 or any of the Pre-Congress events in May.
However, I am pleased to tell you that we are planning to postpone the Congress to later this year, with the aim of holding ECE 2020 in Prague.
We are currently investigating potential options with the Prague Congress Centre.
Our dedicated Working Group is working hard to evaluate and discuss all options and decide on the best course of action. We acknowledge that you may have questions about some of the arrangements that you have made to date. We will update you again in due course once decisions have been made and the finer details worked out.
We would like to thank you for your ongoing support of ESE and your understanding while we formulate a strong plan for a safe ECE 2020 – where we can all meet together in Prague.
