The EYES Research Observership Programme (ROP) enables Early Career Investigators (ECI) doing basic or translational research from Europe to grow and learn during a short, one-month stay in an endocrine centres of special interest. These are referred to as an “observership" due to different European laws.
Several Observerships are awarded each year, including three funded by ESE (COP and ROP) amounting to €1,000 each, and others that are self-funded by participants.
New for 2024: EYES Advanced Research Observership Programme (Advanced ROP)
This year, we launch the EYES Advanced Research Observership Grant programme. This allows awardees to conduct basic or translational scientific projects at their allocated ROP centre for up to three months, with a grant of up to €3,000 per awardee.
The programme is aimed at experienced basic and translational scientists and clinicians with advanced experience working in basic or translational projects. Applicants will be required to specify their previous experience and will get a chance to participate in ongoing projects in centres participating in the EYES ROP programme.
Note: Applicants cannot apply for both ROP and Advanced ROP in the same application year.
THE GRANT APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2024 OBSERVERSHIPS HAVE NOW CLOSED. APPLICANTS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE OUTCOME IN DUE COURSE. Applications for the 2025 Observership Grants will open in December 2024.

Applications for 2024 Observership Grants are now open. In addition to completing an application form you will need to provide the following:
- The names of your two preferred centres of interest from the list and your field of interest (you may be assigned to your second preference if the first is unavailable).
- Two letters of recommendation: one from a mentor and the other from the Head of Department
- CV (one page) and motivation letter (max 250 words)
- Agreement to the ROP terms and conditions document
- Current ESE membership number

All applications will be reviewed by the EYES Committee, a representative from the ESE Science Committee (for ROP) and a representative of the Clinical Committee (for COP).

The closing date for applications is 31 March 2024.
- All applicants must be fully paid current ESE Members. Applicants are required to be a graduated basic/translational scientist or MD working in an endocrine field (with or without PhD status). Applicants are required to have published (as one of the authors) at least two papers indexed in Current Contents (CC).

Please note: We are unable to provide grants to individuals or institutions currently under sanction according to the consolidated list of financial sanctions targets in the UK, as listed here.
Applications are verified to ensure this is not the case before a grant is awarded. ESE does not permit sanctioned individuals or individuals from sanctioned institutions to attend any ESE events.
Successful applicants are required to complete:
- The EYES Observership Logbook: a short notebook with activities during the ROP programme.
- Evaluation form of the host centre and applicant. This is to be submitted in the form of a report to ESE.
- A photo during the Observership and a 300-word article describing how the experience benefited them; this will be published in EYES News.
The awarded applicants will receive an official Certificate upon completion of the ROP programme, signed by the EYES Committee Chair and the ESE Science Committee representative.
Grants are paid to applications after the Observership and on receipt of an expense claim form and supporting receipts or documentation. These need to be submitted to the ESE Office within 6 weeks of the Observership, or the application will be void. Payment to an institution can be made in advance of the meeting or event. The Observership must be started within 18 months of the grant being awarded.
