Development of a standardised European emergency card for patients with hypoparathyroidism

The European Society of Endocrinology has worked with hypoparathyroidism organisations across Europe to investigate the development of an emergency card for patients with hypoparathyroidism.

In 2018, ESE supported a preliminary study into the perceived need and potential impact on patients of such a card. A sample of 336 Norwegian and Swedish patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism responded to a patient survey, with 87% feeling that an emergency card for hypoparathyroidism would be highly needed or useful.

Following this survey, ESE is now planning to work with national endocrine societies and hypoparathyroidism patient groups across Europe, to ensure that patients have access to a standardised emergency card, translated into their local language.

ESE continues to support patient-led initiatives to improve clinical care and quality-of-life.
