PARAT: An ESE Educational programme on Parathyroid Disorders

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in parathyroid disorders, as our understanding of this rare disease increases, and new treatment options become available. In response, ESE published the Clinical Practice Guideline on the Treatment of Chronic Hypoparathyroidism in Adults in 2015.

In 2017, ESE conceived an ambitious four-year programme to develop further consensus recommendations and strategies that would promote best clinical practice around parathyroid disorders. A key objective was to improve access to this information through the delivery of high quality medical educational activity via eventspublicationsenduring materials and other learning experiences.

As the programme gathered momentum, it focused more specifically on identifying and making recommendations on how to alleviate a number of unmet educational needs in the areas of:

  • Primary Hyperparathyroidism
  • Hypoparathyroidism in Adults
  • Preconception, pregnancy and lactation

Through the collaboration of 100 leading parathyroid experts from over 20 countries in the past four years, the PARAT programme has completed multiple inter-connected activities that have led to the community establishing 33 expert recommendations on how to best diagnose, manage and treat parathyroid disorder patients.

The expert recommendations have been translated into a variety of accessible, resource formats which are available for free within the following areas of the PARAT web hub.
