European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) funding

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) is a professional organization of more than 1,800 life scientists.  Its goal is to promote research in life science and enable international exchange between scientists. EMBO provides support for the life sciences in Europe and beyond by funding  researchers as well as conferences, training and networking activities.

Fellowships, grants and career support

Postdoctoral Fellowships

EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships support scientists to carry out research for a period of up to two years. International mobility is a key requirement.

Scientific Exchange Grants

EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants support new, international collaborations, enabling the transfer of expertise unavailable in the applicant’s laboratory. The grants fund research visits of up to three months.

New Venture Fellowships

In memory of a bright-minded and passionate scientist, the EMBO New Venture Fellowships will help young scientists explore topics outside their current area to allow them to pursue a new research direction in their future work

Core Facility Fellowships

EMBO Core Facility Fellowships support training for staff of core facilities that provide services to research institutions or universities. The fellowships fund international exchanges of up to one month.

Young Investigator Programme

The EMBO Young Investigator Programme supports group leaders in the early stages of setting up their independent laboratories for a period of four years. Networking is a key aspect of the programme.

Installation Grants

EMBO Installation Grants fund group leaders in the early stages of setting up their independent laboratories in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal or Turkey for three to five years. Networking is a key aspect of the programme.

Global Investigator Network

The EMBO Global Investigator Network supports scientists in the early stages of setting up their independent laboratories in Chile, India, Singapore or Taiwan for a period of four years. It provides funding for networking, collaboration and training activities.

Funding for conferences and training

Workshops: Funding for meetings that stimulate exchanges of the latest scientific knowledge

Practical Courses: Funding for courses that provide training in techniques and promote the transfer of methodologies

Global Lecture Courses: Funding for lecture courses for scientific exchange beyond European borders

EMBO | FEBS Lecture Courses: Funding for lecture courses on timely topics in biochemistry, molecular biology and related areas

India | EMBO Lecture Courses: Funding for lecture courses to teach PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in India

Lecture, travel and childcare grants

EMBO Member Keynote Lectures

EMBO Member Keynote Lectures are given by an EMBO Member or Associate Member at a major international scientific meeting. Organizers receive funding to cover travel and accommodation for the speaker, or costs associated with a virtual meeting platform.

EMBO Young Investigator Lectures

Young Investigator Lectures are given by an EMBO Young Investigator at a scientific meeting. Organizers receive funding to cover travel and accommodation costs.

EMBO Global Lecture Series

EMBO Global Lecture Series enhance collaboration between scientists worldwide. The series of lectures are given at institutions outside Europe by EMBO Members or Young Investigators, or by leading researchers from outside Europe who visit European institutions.

Policy Lectures

Women in Science Lectures address policy implications of science and technology. They are given at scientific meetings. Organizers receive funding to cover travel and accommodation costs of the speaker.

Women in Science Lectures

Women in Science Lectures address issues related to gender and diversity in science. They are given at scientific meetings funded by EMBO. Organizers receive funding to cover travel and accommodation costs of the speaker.

Travel grants

Travel grants support participants who have been selected to attend a scientific meeting funded by EMBO. Applications and questions should be addressed to the organizer of the meeting.

Childcare grants

Childcare grants cover childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers of a scientific meeting funded by EMBO. Applications and questions should be addressed to the organizer of the meeting.
