New study monitors home insulin pump use among hospitalised children with Type 1 diabetes

Researchers found home insulin pump use vs hospital-issued insulin pumps was associated with similar glycemic control outcomes.

The study aimed to address a lack of data regarding the safety of home insulin pump use in a hospital setting despite their widespread use, particularly among children and adolescents. The study included 2,738 hospitalised patients with a median age of 15.8 years.

The researchers concluded, “Pediatric institutions should consider adult safety data, existing clinical guidelines that support inpatient use of home pumps, our findings, and patient and family preferences when establishing internal policies on home pump use during pediatric admissions.”
