Anton Luger

Anton Luger was born in Vienna and went there to school at the Lycee francais and Theresianische Akademie. After an intermezzo studying Law and Interpreter for French he turned to Medicine and graduated in 1978. Before starting his training in internal medicine, Anton joined the Institute of Pharmacology of the University of Vienna for two years where he was involved in studies on colonic ion transport in rabbits serving as model for the distal nephron of the kidney. From 1985-1986 Professor Luger was a Max Kade fellow at the Developmental Endocrinology Branch at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, USA, working with George Chrousos and Lynn Loriaux studying exercise physiology and the interplay between the endocrine and immune systems. Thereafter Anton returned to the Medical University of Vienna, where he served as Deputy Head, Acting Head and Head of the Clinical Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism from 1995 through 2018. Besides his strong devotion to patient care and teaching, his main scientific interests are Neuroendocrinology and Diabetes mellitus. Anton have published 258 original papers among others in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Diabetes and Diabetes Care as first or last author.
