The European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) is seeking an experienced Senior Guideline Methodologist to join our Clinical Practice Guideline programme.
ESE Clinical Practice Guidelines aim to provide high-quality, evidence-based recommendations for patient care across a broad range of endocrine conditions. Our guidelines are developed through a rigorous, transparent and standardised process, with methodology based on the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced methodologist to provide senior methodological leadership across the development of ESE Clinical Practice Guidelines and to work alongside leading experts in endocrinology from across Europe and beyond.
About the role
As Senior Methodologist, you will work closely with the guideline Chair(s), multidisciplinary guideline panel, ESE staff and the ESE Clinical Guideline Methodology Post-doc.
You will provide methodological leadership throughout the guideline development process, including:
- developing and prioritising focussed clinical questions using the PICO framework;
- overseeing systematic evidence reviews, including literature searches, risk of bias assessment and evidence synthesis;
- applying GRADE methodology and Evidence-to-Decision frameworks;
- supporting assessment of certainty of evidence, benefits and harms, patient values and preferences, resource use, feasibility, equity and acceptability;
- facilitating the development of clear, evidence-based and actionable recommendations;
- supporting guideline panels to distinguish between certainty of evidence and strength of recommendation;
- ensuring methodological transparency, reproducibility and appropriate reporting; and
- supporting consensus-building and resolving methodological issues within multidisciplinary panels.
You will also contribute to maintaining the scientific integrity and independence of the guideline process and will have the opportunity to mentor and support colleagues with less methodological experience.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for an experienced guideline methodologist with:
- substantial experience in clinical practice guideline development;
- expert knowledge of GRADE methodology and Evidence-to-Decision frameworks;
- strong experience in systematic reviews and evidence synthesis;
- experience developing, grading and/or critically appraising clinical recommendations;
- experience working with multidisciplinary guideline panels;
- excellent facilitation, communication and consensus-building skills; and
- a strong commitment to methodological rigour, transparency, scientific independence and patient-centred decision-making.
Experience in endocrinology or endocrine guideline development would be advantageous, but is not essential.

ESE Clinical Practice Guidelines are published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the European Journal of Endocrinology (EJE), ESE's official journal, which publishes international clinical practice guidelines and position statements.

Recent ESE guidelines include guidance on adrenal incidentalomas, aggressive pituitary tumours and pituitary carcinomas, glucocorticoid-induced adrenal insufficiency and pituitary adenomas in pregnancy. ESE also works with partner organisations on joint and collaborative guidelines, including the Endocrine Society (ES), European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) and the European Renal Association (ERA) and many more.
Commitment
This is a voluntary role requiring a sustained commitment throughout the development of each guideline. The time commitment will vary depending on the scope and complexity of the guideline.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in key guideline meetings and provide timely methodological input throughout the development process. The expected commitment will be discussed and agreed prior to appointment.
