Recommendations for diagnosis and management of the polycystic ovary syndrome

Chair Renato Pasquali, Italy

In December 2011, a Special Interest Group was established to identify opportunities to improve the knowledge and understanding of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) across Europe.

Focusing on the identification and development of relevant information for endocrinologists and gynaecologists relating to the diagnosis and management of PCOS, this SIG carried out a survey of European specialists to understand current practice and knowledge levels across Europe. Using the results of this survey, and a comprehensive literature study, the SIG developed an ESE position statement offering a critical endocrine and European perspective on the definition of PCOS, summarising major aspects related to this condition. In addition, the statement offers information on how to target treatment choices according to the phenotype and individual patient’s needs. Finally, suggested areas of translational and clinical research for the future with specific emphasis on hormonal and metabolic aspects of PCOS are provided.
