ESE Profile

The European Society of Endocrinology ‘ESE’ was created in 2006  as a not-for-profit charity. The vision of ESE is: shaping the future of endocrinology to improve science, knowledge and health. We unite, support and represent our specialty.

ESE represents a community of > 22 500 European endocrine health care professionals, by either individual membership (Jan 2021:  4600 HCP’s) or through affiliation with national and endocrine specialty societies across Europe (66 societies in total). The discipline of endocrinology is characterized by a high integration of research and clinical perspectives: of our membership,  50% is primarily clinically oriented, 40% is engaged in both clinical work and basic / clinical research, and 10% is focussed on basic research.

The health related research agenda of the European Commission and the different funding programmes are highly relevant to our community of endocrine specialists, the science they develop and the patients they see. ESE’s endocrine ‘hormone’ expertise provides relevant insights needed to develop targeted research and action plans, and supports the implementation and impact of these plans, aiming ultimately for better health for citizens around Europe – both inside and outside the EU.

The endocrine expertise, clinical and research, covers highly relevant and major societal challenges imposed by conditions like obesity, diabetes, cancer, bone and thyroid disease, and infertility disorders, as well as more than 440 rare endocrine diseases, including endocrine cancers. Developing the research and science behind these clinical conditions, from mechanistic understanding, prevention,  diagnosis to management and long term outcomes,  is at the heart of what the society and its members stand for. This also relates to the environmental and health perspectives and challenges represented by ‘Endocrine Disruptors’.

ESE, through its expert groups, its congress, educational programmes, clinical guidelines development programmes and reach into the endocrine professionals community can be an impactful partner for research consortia to build research relationships, develop advisory panels and augment the impact of projects by a strong communication and outreach to the endocrine HCP’s audience across Europe.
