On 2 September 2026, ESE with the Endocrine Society and European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) sent a letter to Members of the European Parliament who sit on the AGRI (Agriculture) and ENVI (Public Health and Environment) Committee, urging them to reject parts of the Food and Feed Safety Omnibus that could weaken protections against harmful chemicals, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
EDCs can interfere with hormone systems and have been linked to adverse outcomes such as impaired fertility, metabolic disease, certain cancers and neurodevelopmental effects. Exposure is especially concerning during foetal development, infancy and childhood, when hormones guide essential growth processes.
The proposed changes to EU pesticide rules could:
- Remove mandatory periodic re-evaluation of most pesticides
- Allow hazardous substances, including EDCs, to remain on the market longer through derogations and extended grace periods
- Limit the use of new scientific evidence in authorisation decisions
The three Societies state that these retrograde legislative steps must be halted.
This action is part of ESE’s ongoing campaign urging EU policymakers to implement stricter legislation towards a toxic-free environment, in line with the European Green Deal.
